Attorney General Alan Wilson joins 26-state coalition supporting West Virginia 'Save Women’s Sports Act'
Aug 15, 2024
(COLUMBIA, S.C.) - Attorney General Alan Wilson has joined a coalition of 26 state attorneys general in an amicus brief urging the United States Supreme Court to review West Virginia’s appeal of a lower court decision that invalidated the state's law protecting girls’ sports.
“Title IX leveled the playing field for girls and women in sports, but radically reinterpreting Title IX to allow biological boys to play on girls teams is dangerous and would reverse the gains we have made,” Attorney General Wilson stated.
The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit blocked West Virginia’s “Save Women’s Sports Act,” which prohibits male athletes from participating on girls’ sports teams, citing that the law violated Title IX. In response, West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey filed a petition with the United States Supreme Court seeking an appeal.
In addition to Attorney General Wilson, attorneys general from Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Wyoming have also endorsed the lawsuit initiated by Arkansas and Missouri.
