WASHINGTON — In response to the Biden administration's recent decision to release another Iran sanctions waiver, Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and several Republican senators are demanding transparency and accountability from the administration regarding the handling of sanctioned Iranian funds. The latest waiver, potentially worth billions of dollars, has raised concerns among lawmakers about the accessibility of these funds by the Iranian regime.

Thirteen Republican senators, including Banking Committee Republicans like Senators Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Katie Britt (R-Ala.), and Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), joined Senator Tim Scott in a letter to Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. In the letter, they expressed their concerns about the implications of the waiver on funding terrorism and the lack of congressional oversight in the decision-making process.

"It is unfathomable that this is the context in which the administration determined that it was within the national security interest of the United States to waive sanctions on restricted Iranian funds, making them more accessible to the regime," the senators wrote in the letter. They also pointed out specific legislative requirements that were intended to limit the Iranian regime's access to hard currency from petroleum sales.

The letter highlighted the discrepancy between the administration's actions and congressional intent, stating, "The United States should be restricting Iran’s access to currency abroad. Instead, your administration is expanding it, all while continuing to share limited information on a strategy to restore deterrence in the Middle East with Congress or the American people."

This latest effort by Senator Scott and his colleagues follows previous initiatives aimed at holding the administration accountable for its Iran policy. In November, Senator Scott led a group of senators in criticizing the administration's lack of a coherent Iran strategy after a similar sanctions waiver was extended. The senators have consistently called for a clear plan to deter Iranian aggression and prevent conflict escalation in the region.

Senator Scott and his fellow Republicans are now awaiting detailed answers from the administration regarding their concerns and the decision-making process behind the Iran sanctions waivers.
