U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham has urged President Joe Biden to intervene in labor strikes occurring at ports nationwide. Graham expressed concerns about the impact of these strikes on recovery efforts in South Carolina and North Carolina following Hurricane Helene.
Graham stated, "I can’t emphasize [this enough:] The strike needs to end sooner rather than later. I cannot tell you how seriously this will jeopardize our recovery [from Hurricane Helene] in South Carolina and North Carolina. This is going to jeopardize public health. It’s going to jeopardize public safety…”
He further highlighted a federal law that permits the president to halt strikes affecting public welfare, saying, "There’s a federal law on the books that allows the president of the United States to stop and enjoin strikes like this that can affect the public good and the public welfare…”
Emphasizing the importance of the Port of Charleston for South Carolina, Graham added, "[The Port of Charleston] is an essential outlet to the world for South Carolina… So President Biden… I am urging you, I am telling you, I am begging you [to] end this strike sooner rather than later because you’re adding misery to pain.”
