PLANTERSVILLE, South Carolina – White House Farm, a heirloom rice producer in Georgetown County is sponsoring along with The Village Group the Cultural Festival as part of Tour de Plantersville on Saturday, October 29th.
“We are very excited and proud to be able to share with our community and visitors what White House Farms is doing right here in Plantersville and what it will bring to our future. Having rice grown, cultivated and processed in our community is a huge benefit to everyone. To be able to offer the youth of the area the opportunity to be part of this enterprise could bring so much to Plantersville,” stated Ray Funnye, Executive Director of The Village Group.
The Cultural Festival’s Vendor Village opens at 10 am running through 2 pm. The Village will feature numerous artisan quality crafters along with information on the rich history and culture of the area as well as tasty food vendors such an Aunny’s Country Kitchen and the Caribbean Food Truck. White House Farms will be offering samples of its flavorful rice, sharing the history of the areas rice growing and have product to sell. Bring your lawn chair and settle in for the upbeat sounds of the Reggae band Mystic Vibrations starting at noon.
White House Farms is located in the heart of the historic rice-belt region of Georgetown County, South Carolina. When the Quattlebaum family took over the stewardship of White House Farms in 2011, they were drawn to the rich history of the land. Starting in the 18th century, the peaty, muddy tidal fields here have produced rice that is uniquely flavorful and redolent of the Lowcountry terroir. Although these rice fields endured more than two centuries of wars, hurricanes, even the Great Depression, insurmountable hurdles eventually ceased rice production at White House – until now.
The family feels honored to reignite the rice-growing tradition here and to be one of the largest single estate growers of Charleston Gold Rice. Charleston Gold is a superior variety developed from Carolina Gold - the heirloom variety that made Georgetown County one of the world’s largest and most renowned rice growing areas.
While honoring the tradition of growing this storied variety, they are also honoring the legacy of their son, Andy, who was passionate about this place, devoted to conservation, and loved the outdoors. A portion of each sale of Andy’s Charleston Gold Rice supports The Andy Quattlebaum and Blackwell Family Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charity.
