Governor Henry McMaster | Governor Henry McMaster, SC
Governor Henry McMaster of South Carolina has spearheaded an initiative among Republican governors to express their support for President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Initiative. In a joint letter addressed to Congressional leaders, the governors highlighted the significance of balancing the federal budget.
"We are writing today to express our overwhelming support for President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Initiative and request that Congress work alongside him to solidify the efficiencies that are found into law," stated the governors. They emphasized their experience in streamlining state governments and expressed solidarity with President Trump's efforts at the federal level.
The letter further elaborated on the success achieved by states through fiscal responsibility: "These results don’t just happen overnight. Our states are successful because we live within our means. We balance our budgets, lower taxes, leverage surpluses, pay down debt, improve the efficiency of state governments, and create an environment where our constituents can build a prosperous future for themselves, their family, and their community."
Additionally, they called for similar fiscal discipline in Washington: "It is past time for Washington to live within its means too. We support President Trump’s appointment of Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy and agree with their assertion that the federal government needs to be cut down to size. We stand ready to help."
The letter was led by Governor McMaster in his capacity as RGA Policy Chair and was signed by 26 other Republican governors from various states including Alabama's Kay Ivey, Florida's Ron DeSantis, Texas' Greg Abbott, and Virginia's Glenn Youngkin.
