The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has announced its decision to key-vote Senate Bill 244, a piece of tort reform legislation aimed at reducing lawsuit abuse in the state. Ben Homeyer, NFIB State Director, emphasized the significance of this bill for small businesses.
"Senate Bill 244 is one of NFIB’s top priorities this session," stated Homeyer. He explained that by key-voting S.244, they are signaling to senators that small business owners strongly support the legislation and that each vote on the bill will be reported to NFIB members and their constituents.
Homeyer described S.244 as "commonsense legislation" designed to curb frivolous and excessive claims by ensuring that defendants, including small business owners, are only held accountable for their fair share of damages.
"Lawsuit abuse drives up insurance costs, which drives up the cost of doing business in South Carolina," he noted. Homeyer urged the Senate to act swiftly in passing this critical legislation.
