The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) and the South Carolina Department of Education’s Office of Adult Education (SCDE) created a partnership program called the General Education Development (GED) Inventive Program. The program offers residents the chance to earn their GED free of charge and receive a one time $500 payment if they pass the exam.

The program is offered to Unemployment Insurance claimants who can work to earn their GED and receive incentive payments upon completetion. The program was created orginally to be offered just during the pandemic to those receiving unemployment benefits, however it was expanded in 2023 to any South Carolina resident who earns their GED.

Another addition to the program offers an additional one time $500 payment to individuals who complete a short term occupational training program through a participating organization of the South Carolina Technical College system.

Eligibility includes being a resident of the state of South Carolina, 19 years of age or older, and not a current holder of a GED or high school diploma of any state. Particpants must also have started a secondary credential program during the current 2023-24 school year and earn their credential by June 1, 2024.
