Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on December 7.
The South Carolina House took the first step towards wrapping up the decennial redistricting process this week, approving a new map for their 124 House districts. The plan passed by a vote of 96-14.
Ten incumbents — four Republicans and six Democrats — are drawn into districts with one another, setting up potential primaries next year, and at least two districts are left without an incumbent after their representative was shifted into a neighboring district, according to The State newspaper.
The Senate will return to the Statehouse on Monday, Dec. 6, to begin debating and voting on the new map proposal for the 46 Senate districts. Both chambers will also need to approve plans for the state’s U.S. House map.
Some advocacy groups, including the League of Women Voters of South Carolina, have criticized the House map due to the low number of competitive districts. The plans could still face legal challenges.
While in the special session, the House rejected efforts by some lawmakers to take up legislation barring employer vaccine mandates. That bill could instead come up for consideration when the chamber returns for regular session in January.
