EnerSys, a prominent global player in energy storage systems and solutions, has announced an expansion of its operations in Sumter County, South Carolina. The company is investing $6.7 million into this project, which is expected to create 14 new jobs.

Based in Pennsylvania, EnerSys is recognized for providing efficient and sustainable energy solutions worldwide. It operates over 32 manufacturing facilities globally, including its Sumter metal plant established in 1972. In 2024, EnerSys revealed plans to open a lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility in Greenville County.

The current expansion involves adding 34,000 square feet to the existing facility at 1990 Corporate Way in Sumter. This development aims to meet the increasing demand for lithium, flooded, and Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) battery products. The expanded operations are projected to be operational by May 2025. To support this expansion, the Coordinating Council for Economic Development has awarded a $100,000 Rural Infrastructure Fund grant to Sumter County for construction and site development costs.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster commented on the announcement: “Today’s announcement by EnerSys further strengthens South Carolina’s reputation as a leader in advanced manufacturing."

Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III added: “We are pleased to see EnerSys reinforcing its decades-long legacy in our state by expanding its Sumter County operation."

Murrell Smith Jr., Speaker of the S.C. House of Representatives remarked: “EnerSys’ expansion reinforces South Carolina’s strong standing as a hub for advanced manufacturing."

Sumter County Council Chairman James McCain expressed gratitude: “We are grateful that EnerSys is continuing its commitment by expanding their Sumter County operations."
