U.S. Senators Tim Scott and Marco Rubio have introduced a bill to replenish the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) following significant hurricane damage in South Carolina and other southeastern states. The proposed legislation seeks to allocate $20 billion to the DRF, which is crucial for assisting recovery efforts after natural disasters.
Senator Tim Scott emphasized the severe impact of Hurricane Helene on South Carolina, noting that it "claimed 49 lives and left over a million without power." He stated, "When any state experiences a natural disaster of this magnitude, Congress has a responsibility to step up and do its job."
Senator Marco Rubio highlighted the importance of the DRF as "the front line for states, and our constituents, to receive support in the aftermath of natural disasters." He added that while assessments continue, it is essential not to allow the fund to be depleted.
Senator Bill Cassidy expressed his commitment to ensuring FEMA has resources to aid those affected by recent hurricanes, including Milton, Helene, and Francine. Senator John Cornyn warned about FEMA spending almost half of its disaster fund with weeks left in hurricane season.
Senator Rick Scott reported on-the-ground observations from Florida and underscored the necessity for federal government support. He called for immediate aid through the proposed $20 billion funding for FEMA's Disaster Relief Fund.
The announcement saw support from Senators Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), and John Cornyn (R-Texas), emphasizing bipartisan backing for replenishing disaster relief funds amid ongoing hurricane challenges.
