U.S. Senator Tim Scott, alongside Senator Thom Tillis, has introduced two crucial bills aimed at combating sanctuary cities and ensuring the safety of American communities. The Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act and the Immigration Detainer Enforcement Act come in the wake of tragic events like the brutal murder of Laken Riley by an illegal immigrant, Jose Ibarra. Senator Scott emphasized the importance of these bills, stating, “President Biden’s open border policies, combined with Democrat-run sanctuary cities, are putting Americans’ lives at risk.”

Senator Tillis echoed these sentiments, pointing out the dangers posed by sanctuary policies, saying, “It is clear President Biden and liberal politicians want to prioritize reckless sanctuary policies over public safety.” He stressed the need for Congress to intervene and hold sanctuary cities accountable for their actions.

The Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act aims to provide justice for victims and their families affected by sanctuary city policies. It establishes a private right of action for individuals harmed by these policies and requires states to waive immunity to receive certain federal grants. On the other hand, the Immigration Detainer Enforcement Act seeks to clarify DHS detainer authority and incentivize cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the Department of Homeland Security.

These legislative efforts have garnered support from several senators, including Ted Cruz and Roger Marshall. The bills address the detrimental impact of illegal immigration policies, such as those that led to Laken Riley’s tragic murder.
