AnMed Health issued the following announcement on February 9.
Yesterday, nurse navigators at the AnMed Health Cancer Center joined Mr. Royce Veal in celebration of him receiving a Quilt of Valor for his military service. A Quilt of Valor is a quality, handmade quilt awarded to a service member or veteran who has been touched by war.
"Mr. Veal was one of my first patients in my role as a nurse navigator. After getting to know him and his family, we discussed his military service and I asked him if he had ever gotten a Quilt of Valor. When he said no, I started the process of obtaining one. Since he lives in Georgia, I had to go through a different avenue through the state of Georgia than the traditional route. I asked permission from the family and was able to get in contact with Quilts of Valor in the state of Georgia to award him one," said nurse navigator Tracy Lowie.
Dr. Cannick, a radiation oncologist, is also a Navy veteran like Mr. Veal so Lowie thought it was only appropriate that he present the quilt. Lowie's grandfather had been gifted a Quilt of Valor and held it dear until his passing so she has incorporated that service into the care plan of cancer patients who have served in the military.
We are so thankful for Tracy Lowie and all of our nurse navigators for going the extra mile in patient care!
