On June 30, Gov. Henry McMaster sent hundreds of National Guard troops to the Texas border, announcing the move on Twitter.

“What is happening at our southern border is a crisis. That is why I deployed over 300 @SCNationalGuard troops to help border states. The SC National Guard is the best in the nation and they are doing a great service to their country by helping protect our border,” McMaster wrote in the tweet, which included a quoted tweet from U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman.

Norman, a Republican, was one of five House legislators to sign a letter sent to McMaster expressing support for sending the state’s National Guard troops to the border states.

In the letter, the legislators wrote, “We are writing to you today to thank you for being one of the first Governors to send resources — including over 300 National Guard troops — to border states and helping combat this national crisis.

“As you know from your visit to the border in April 2021, the meteoric rise in illegal immigration created by President Biden’s administration caused Gov. (Greg) Abbot to issue a disaster declaration in Texas, and Gov. (Doug) Ducey to declare an emergency in Arizona.”

The letter is signed by Norman and fellow South Carolina Republican Congressmen Joe Wilson, Tom Rice, Jeff Duncan and William R. Timmons, IV.

In addition, McMaster issued a declaration that prohibits the federal government from placing undocumented, unaccompanied migrant children from the southern border in South Carolina foster care and group homes.
