Republican U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman recently took to social media to mourn the passing of former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
Rumsfeld passed away June 29 at the age of 88 in Taos, New Mexico, NBC News reported.
“It didn't matter what was happening around him, you always felt like Donald Rumsfeld had a deep, sincere love for his country,” Norman wrote in a June 30 Twitter post.
Rumsfeld, who died from multiple myeloma, was secretary of defense under Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush.
He was the youngest and oldest person to serve as defense secretary, according to Slate magazine.
Rumsfeld was behind the country's post-9/11 invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, with the latter leading to the capture of Saddam Hussein in 2003. He was criticized for authorizing the abusive interrogation techniques of Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay prisoners.
Rumsfeld previously served four terms as an Illinois congressman.
In addition to being the secretary of state under President Ford, he was a White House chief of staff and a NATO ambassador. He also held the latter position under President Richard Nixon.
