The Wofford College men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Catamount Classic hosted by Western Carolina University on Apr. 24, achieving several top ten finishes and event victories.
The competition matters for Wofford as it showcased strong performances across a range of events, setting personal bests and school records ahead of the upcoming Southern Conference Championship.
Olivia Burroughs won the women’s pole vault with a height of 3.65 meters, while JaKayla Campbell secured first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.53 seconds. Taylor Jennings-Ward took first in the women’s 400 meters with a personal best of 54.46 seconds, Zion Bennett won the men’s 400 meters in 47.79 seconds, and Liam Jones claimed victory in the men’s 800 meters at 1:52.05.
Other notable results included Pamela Ann Pope finishing third in women’s pole vault (3.05m), Patrick Green II placing fifth in men’s long jump (6.92m), Maggie Frana setting a school freshman record with an eighth-place finish in women’s discus (40.98m), and Andrea Landrum taking second place in women’s triple jump (11.92m). The Terriers also saw success in relay events, with their women’s team finishing second in both the 4×100-meter relay (46.06) and one heat of the 4×400-meter relay (3:49.10).
The meet was condensed to one day due to weather conditions instead of being held over two days as originally planned. Other schools participating included The Citadel, East Tennessee State, Gardner-Webb, South Carolina State, Tennessee Tech, UNC Asheville, and Western Carolina.
Looking ahead, Wofford’s track and field teams are preparing for their next appearance at the Southern Conference Championship scheduled for May 11-12 at Western Carolina.
