The Wofford College softball team lost the deciding game of its series against Furman, 5-3, according to an April 25 announcement. The loss puts Wofford at a season record of 30-17 and a conference record of 7-10.
This result is significant as it affects the team’s standing within the conference and comes near the end of their regular season schedule. With only one series remaining, each game becomes important for postseason positioning.
Abby Greenwood started on the mound for Wofford, pitching two innings and allowing two runs on four hits. Maddie Berry pitched in relief during the third inning, giving up one run on two hits. Margaret Axelson contributed with another inning, surrendering two runs on two hits. Natalya Salo finished out the final two innings without allowing any hits and recording one strikeout. Greenwood was charged with the loss. Desirae Devine led offensively by going one-for-two with two runs batted in, while Rivers Sampson went two-for-four with an RBI. Gracie Parker recorded a stolen base for Wofford.
Furman took an early lead by scoring twice in the first inning. Although Wofford loaded the bases in their half of the second inning, they were unable to score at that time. The Terriers narrowed Furman’s lead to 2-1 in the fourth after Desirae Devine drove home Rivers Sampson following a fielding error by Furman.
Furman answered back immediately with another run before extending their advantage to three runs after hitting back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning. Despite scoring once more late in the seventh inning, Wofford could not close the gap further and ended up losing by two runs.
Looking ahead, Wofford will play its final regular season games at home against Western Carolina from May 1 through May 2; senior day will be observed during this last series.
