The Wofford College softball team defeated Western Carolina 5-2 on May 2 at Hope Field, securing its first series sweep in conference play this season.
This victory is significant as it improves the Terriers’ record to 33-17 overall and 10-11 in conference games. The win also marks a strong finish before the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament.
Natalya Salo started as pitcher for Wofford, allowing only two runs on eight hits and striking out two batters. Salo’s performance improved her season record to 11-3 after winning both games she pitched during the weekend. Offensively, Kaytlin Greenwood led the team by going two-for-three with an RBI and scoring twice. Desirae Devine contributed with a single that brought in two runs, while Kate Platte and Emry Masterson each added one RBI. Abbi Campbell also had a strong showing at the plate with two hits from three attempts. Both Greenwood and Devine recorded stolen bases during the game.
The Catamounts took an early lead in the second inning, but Wofford quickly responded when Greenwood scored after a single by Masterson tied the game at one run each. In the third inning, Wofford broke ahead with three more runs—highlighted by Greenwood’s double and Devine’s two-run single—giving them a solid advantage over Western Carolina.
Western Carolina narrowed the gap in the sixth inning to make it 4-2, but Wofford answered back immediately as Platte drove in another run to restore their three-run lead. Salo and her teammates held off any further advances from Western Carolina through seven innings of play.
Looking ahead, Wofford will participate in the Southern Conference Tournament scheduled for May 6-9 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The team will learn its official tournament seeding once regular season games conclude.
