The Winthrop University baseball team lost 3-0 to Gardner-Webb University on April 24 at John Henry Moss Stadium. The defeat ended the Eagles’ five-game winning streak against Gardner-Webb.

The game was significant as it marked a shift in momentum for the Eagles, who had previously dominated their matchups with Gardner-Webb. Despite recording five hits and three walks, Winthrop was unable to score any runs during the game.

Gardner-Webb took an early lead in the third inning with a home run by Agosto. Ripepi extended the lead with another solo homer in the sixth inning, and Carter added a third run for Gardner-Webb in the seventh with a home run to right field. These plays secured all three runs for Gardner-Webb and finalized the score at 3-0.

For Winthrop, Corey Wouters went two-for-four at bat while Cade Norton contributed one hit in three appearances. Pitcher Brayden Gilley pitched six and two-thirds innings and recorded six strikeouts. Harrison Wilson pitched one and one-third innings without allowing any hits and struck out two batters. The pitching staff achieved at least eight swinging strikeouts for the second consecutive game.

This matchup also marked only the third time that head coach Mike McGuire has lost to Jim Chester of Gardner-Webb. The Eagles will look to rebound in their next scheduled game against Gardner-Webb.
