The Winthrop University baseball team will travel to Chapel Hill to play the second-ranked North Carolina team on Wednesday, May 5, at Boshamer Stadium.
This matchup is notable as it marks the 25th meeting between the Eagles and the Tar Heels, with North Carolina holding a significant advantage in the all-time series. The Eagles have historically struggled on the road against UNC but achieved a memorable win in Chapel Hill in 2014.
Recent performance highlights for Winthrop include back-to-back seasons with over 30 wins under head coach Mike McGuire. The team currently ranks fifth nationally in hit by pitches and leads their conference in fielding percentage. Several players are making individual impacts: Josh Skowronski ranks among national leaders in walks; Gabe Natividad is third nationally for hit by pitches; Jaylen Hernandez leads the Big South Conference with home runs; and Luke Earnhardt tops strikeouts per nine innings within the conference.
Pitcher Harrison Wilson was named Big South Conference Relief Pitcher of the Week for his performances during early May, including a three-inning save against Asheville where he allowed just one hit and struck out three batters. Earlier this season, Jaylen Hernandez earned Player of the Week honors after hitting three home runs across consecutive games and achieving a .500 batting average over four games.
The Eagles have experienced both winning streaks and setbacks throughout their season but have maintained strong showings against various opponents, including securing their first ever sweep over USC Upstate and recording victories against teams such as Michigan State and Pacific. Coach McGuire returned last season after previously serving as an assistant coach at Winthrop, marking his third stint with the program.
Looking ahead, several Winthrop players are recognized on preseason watchlists or have received weekly honors within their conference. The upcoming game presents another opportunity for Winthrop to challenge a top-ranked opponent.
