USC Upstate announced on May 4 that its men’s baseball team will continue a four-game homestand with a matchup against Elon University at Fluor Field at the West End in Greenville. The game is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, with first pitch set for 6 p.m.
The event marks the fifth consecutive season that USC Upstate has hosted a game at the home of the Greenville Drive. This contest is also the third Division I era meeting between USC Upstate and Elon at this venue. According to the schedule, both teams are coming into this matchup with similar records: USC Upstate holds a record of 22-26 overall and 11-10 in Big South play, while Elon stands at 19-27 overall and 10-17 in Colonial Athletic Association competition.
Probable starting pitchers for Tuesday’s game are right-handed pitcher Andrew Kummer (1-1; 4.60 ERA) for USC Upstate and right-handed pitcher RJ Latkowski (2-1; 5.91 ERA) for Elon. In recent performances, fifth-year senior designated hitter Johnny Sweeney has become notable for homering in three consecutive games during a sweep of Gardner-Webb, setting a new program career home run record since entering Division I play with his thirty-first long ball.
For Elon, graduate student outfielder Brian DuRoff leads his team with seventeen doubles and holds a .321 batting average—the highest among regular players on his squad—and forty-two runs batted in this season.
After facing Elon, USC Upstate will finish its regular season with a three-game Big South series against Presbyterian beginning Friday evening in Clinton. Tickets remain available for Sparty’s Ball on May 15, an annual fundraising event supporting student-athletes.
