Attorney General Alan Wilson has announced that Jonathan Charping, an Upstate man, was sentenced to 28 years in prison for several sex crimes against children. The sentencing took place in Anderson County under Judge Jessica A. Salvini. Charping pleaded guilty to charges including Criminal Sexual Conduct with a Minor, First Degree, and Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, First and Third Degrees.
The case began on May 11th, 2022, when the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office received a cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip involved the uploading of seven Child Sexual Abuse files online. This led investigators to Charping’s residence in Anderson, where he was detained. After being informed of his rights, Charping confessed that his cell phone contained numerous images and videos of Child Sexual Abuse Material. A search confirmed thousands of such files on his device, including a video showing the sexual assault of a two-month-old child recorded in Orangeburg County.
The case was subsequently referred to Investigator John Stuke with the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office after determining Charping’s presence in Orangeburg during the recording period.
Judge Salvini’s sentence requires Charping to serve time at the South Carolina Department of Corrections with credit for 1,013 days already served. He must also register as a Tier 3 Sex Offender and will be subject to lifetime GPS monitoring upon release.
Attorney General Wilson highlighted this case as an example of effective teamwork by South Carolina Attorney General’s ICAC Task Force across jurisdictions to protect children statewide. Representatives from both the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office and the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office were present in court supporting the victim.
