The Citadel baseball team won both games of a Sunday doubleheader against Presbyterian, completing a three-game sweep according to a May 3 announcement. The victories took place at Elton Pollock Field in Clinton, South Carolina.
The results matter for The Citadel as the team improves its record to 25-22 overall and 6-9 in Southern Conference play. Presbyterian drops to 10-38 overall and 6-12 in the Big South Conference.
Head coach Russell Triplett said, “Great weekend for our pitching and defense. Our guys threw really well on the mound, and the bullpen continues to step up and get big outs. The running game was big for us and did just enough offensively to win each game.”
In the first game, Lane Tobin led offensively with two hits, two runs scored, and two walks. Michael Gibson and Christian Stratis each contributed an RBI on one hit apiece. On the mound, Andrew Buffkin pitched five-and-a-third innings allowing only one hit while striking out six batters. Ben Brash recorded an out in relief before Gibson closed with his seventh save of the season.
This one-hit performance by The Citadel’s pitchers marks their first since March 5, 2002.
Presbyterian’s James Green broke up a no-hitter with a bunt single in the sixth inning of game one.
In game two, Carson Hodges provided The Citadel’s only hit while Jayden Williams drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. Trip Brown pitched five scoreless innings for the win; Zane Davis secured his first save of the year by recording two strikeouts over nearly two innings.
Looking ahead, The Citadel will take five days off before returning to Southern Conference action against Samford from May 8–10 at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.
