Governor Henry McMaster has announced that South Carolina will receive federal support to combat the Covington Drive Fire. The state has secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This grant is intended to aid in suppressing the fire near Myrtle Beach.

The FMAG provides funding through the federal Disaster Relief Fund on a cost-share basis. It allows local, state, and tribal agencies involved in firefighting efforts to apply for reimbursement of 75% of eligible fire suppression costs. These costs include expenses related to personnel, equipment, and operations such as air tankers, bulldozers, and additional fire crews.

The Covington Drive Fire began shortly after 2:30 PM on Saturday, March 1. As of now, it has burned over 2,050 acres. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow official guidance as firefighting efforts proceed.
