NFIB State Director Ben Homeyer has expressed approval for the Senate Judiciary Committee's decision to pass Senate Bill 244. This bill aims to address and reduce lawsuit abuse within the state. It is anticipated that the full Senate could vote on this measure as soon as Wednesday.
"S.244 is one of NFIB’s top priorities this session," Homeyer stated. "This commonsense legislation ensures that small business owners and other defendants are held responsible only for their fair share of damages, preventing frivolous and excessive claims."
Homeyer emphasized the right of individuals to seek compensation if wronged or injured but noted concerns about lawsuits being filed to exploit the system. "No one should have to pay for someone else’s mistake just because their lawyer thinks they have deeper pockets," he remarked.
According to Homeyer, lawsuit abuse contributes to rising insurance costs and diverts funds from business growth, job creation, and community support into legal fees. He urged prompt action from the full Senate on this matter: "That’s why we need the full Senate to act quickly and pass this important bill."
In addition, Homeyer expressed gratitude towards Sen. Shane Massey and the Senate Judiciary Committee for their role in advancing this legislation to the Senate floor.
