U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina has issued a statement following the signing of the Laken Riley Act into law by President Donald Trump. The legislation, introduced by U.S. Senator Katie Boyd Britt of Alabama, had Graham as an original cosponsor.
Graham remarked on the significance of the new law, stating, "This is a bittersweet day for America. I appreciate President Trump signing the Laken Riley Act into law, which will require illegal immigrants charged with theft and other crimes to be detained." He expressed that if such a law had existed earlier, it might have prevented the murder of Laken Riley.
The senator highlighted that the individual responsible for Riley's death was released due to insufficient detention space and had previous theft-related arrests overlooked by the Biden Administration.
Graham extended his congratulations to Senator Britt for leading this initiative in the Senate and expressed his hope that the legislation would act as a deterrent and save lives.
