U.S. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina has issued a statement following the Senate's approval of the Laken Riley Act. As a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Scott expressed strong opinions regarding the Biden administration's policies.
"Laken Riley’s murder is the result of an absolute failure by the Biden administration," said Scott. He criticized what he described as "open border, soft-on-crime policies" that he believes have allowed repeat offenders to avoid justice. Scott also stated, "President Biden’s refusal to protect the homeland and secure our southern border cost Laken Riley and other Americans their lives."
Scott emphasized his support for securing borders and stopping illegal immigration, thanking Senators Britt and Budd for their leadership on this issue. He also extended gratitude to Laken Riley's parents for championing the bill.
The Laken Riley Act aims to strengthen immigration enforcement by requiring U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest illegal aliens involved in theft-related offenses. The act mandates detention until these individuals are removed from the United States, aiming to prevent further crimes. Additionally, it allows states to bring civil actions against federal officials who do not enforce or violate immigration laws.
