As part of an ongoing effort to scrutinize the Biden-Harris administration's actions concerning Iran, Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) has led a group of Senate Banking Republicans in expressing concerns over the enforcement of sanctions on Iran's oil sector. In a letter addressed to U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen, Senator Scott and his colleagues called for comprehensive use of sanctions enforcement tools to curb illicit oil transactions involving Iran.

Senator Scott was joined by Senators Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), John Kennedy (R-La.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), and Steve Daines (R-Mont.). The letter emphasized that "Congress has consistently identified Iran’s oil sector as a critical area for sanctions due to its significant role in financing destabilizing regional terrorism and nuclear development."

The senators noted that while recent actions expanding Executive Order 13902 are positive steps, further rigorous enforcement is necessary. They stated, "Lax sanctions enforcement has enabled certain nations, particularly in Southeast Asia, to openly disregard U.S. sanctions and sell Iranian crude to China." An example highlighted was Malaysia's export of oil exceeding its production capacity, suggesting involvement in Iranian oil trade.

The letter concluded with a request for detailed information from the Treasury Department by December 20, 2024.

Senator Scott's focus on this issue follows his oversight efforts related to funds flowing to Iran and its terror proxies after the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas.
