WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) has called for the resignation of Columbia University President Nemat ‘Minouche’ Shafik over the rampant antisemitism on the university's campus. In a statement, Senator Scott emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe environment for all students, particularly Jewish students.
"All institutions that receive federal dollars need to be put on notice that Jewish students have the right to go to class and study peacefully and that their funding is a privilege," stated Senator Scott. He further added, "President Nemat ‘Minouche’ Shafik needs to resign immediately for allowing students to turn their campus into a breeding ground for hatred."
Senator Scott expressed his deep concern about the situation at Columbia University, labeling it as a "disgrace to the core values of our nation." He reiterated his support for the Jewish community, saying, "Our Jewish brothers and sisters have my unwavering support as we combat antisemitism at home and abroad."
The call for President Shafik's resignation comes in the midst of escalating antisemitic protests and incidents on the university campus. Senator Scott has been actively working to address the rise of antisemitism in educational institutions throughout the 118th Congress, emphasizing the need to combat hatred and discrimination against Jewish students.
The demand for accountability and action in response to the prevalence of antisemitism highlights the ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity and safety within academic environments.
