Washington, Apr 16 2024 - Today, U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) introduced the Antisemitism Awareness Act, aimed at tackling the rise of antisemitism on college campuses. The bill directs the Department of Education to utilize the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism when investigating incidents on campus.

Senator Scott highlighted the urgency of addressing antisemitism, stating, “Our nation’s institutions of higher learning have become hotbeds of antisemitism, especially in the wake of the brutal attacks against Israel and innocent civilians by Hamas and Iran.”

The Antisemitism Awareness Act has garnered support from various organizations, including the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations. CEO William Daroff expressed gratitude towards Senator Scott and Senator Casey for their leadership on the issue, emphasizing the importance of clarity in identifying antisemitism on campuses.

Similarly, Christians United for Israel (CUFI) Action Fund Chairwoman Sandra Parker emphasized the collective responsibility in combating antisemitism, stating, “Antisemitism is not a Jewish problem, it’s everyone’s problem.” Parker welcomed the introduction of the bill as a crucial step in addressing the pervasive issue of antisemitism in society.

The Antisemitism Awareness Act has received bipartisan support, with Senator Bob Casey (D-Pa.) joining Senator Scott in leading the initiative. A coalition of senators has also cosponsored the bill, underscoring the broad recognition of the need to combat antisemitism on college campuses.

The IHRA definition of antisemitism, which the bill seeks to implement, provides a clear understanding of antisemitic behavior, including expressions of hatred towards Jews. Senator Scott's unwavering support for Israel and commitment to fighting antisemitism underscore the importance of the Antisemitism Awareness Act in addressing this pressing issue.
