WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C) and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) along with 41 Republican colleagues have taken a strong stance by urging Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to hold a trial to consider the impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

In a letter addressed to Senator Schumer, the senators highlighted the urgency of the situation at the southern border. Senator Tim Scott expressed, "Our brave men and women at Customs and Border Protection have worked tirelessly to make our nation safer, yet with 7.5 million encounters since President Biden took office, our southern border is a national security disaster." He also emphasized the alarming statistics, stating that encounters in fiscal year 2023 had increased by 440% over fiscal year 2020, attributing the border crisis directly to Secretary Mayorkas.

Furthermore, Senator Scott stressed the importance of upholding their constitutional duty, stating, “The House of Representatives has considered this evidence and impeached Secretary Mayorkas. Our constitutional duty requires the Senate to hold a trial. In every previous congressional impeachment of the past 227 years, Congress has been faithful to the process set out by the framers… Never before has the Senate abandoned this duty, even when certain members believed the basis for impeachment was tenuous at best.”

The letter, also signed by prominent Republican figures such as Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Republican Whip John Thune, and several other senators, underlined the gravity of the situation and the necessity for the Senate to act.

The full text of the letter can be found in a Fox News exclusive, providing more insights into the Republican senators' call for an impeachment trial for Secretary Mayorkas.
