Attorney General Alan Wilson | Attorney General Alan Wilson, SC
Attorney General Alan Wilson of South Carolina has called for a renewed attention to the state's bond provisions, emphasizing the importance of enforcing laws that protect South Carolinians. Wilson highlighted the need for judicial consideration of a defendant's immigration status and previous bond history when determining bond.
In a letter addressed to South Carolina solicitors, Wilson expressed his concerns about the current border situation, stating, "It’s clear the Biden Administration isn’t going to close the border, so it’s up to the states to deal with the consequences." He emphasized the role of states in enforcing laws to address the challenges posed by illegal immigration.
Wilson underscored the significance of existing state laws, noting that South Carolina requires lawful immigration status to be considered by the court when determining bond. He also mentioned a new provision related to considering if the defendant was already out on bond for another offense, like repeated shoplifting.
The Attorney General stressed the importance of preventing the release of repeat offenders and holding accountable individuals charged with crimes, including illegal immigrants. Referring to a specific case, Wilson stated, "If Ibarra were held and denied bond in Georgia, Laken Riley would still be alive."
Jose Ibarra, the alleged murderer of Laken Riley, had a history of arrests and releases in different states for various offenses. Wilson's office played a significant role in the passage of a bond reform bill at the end of the previous year.
The letter from Attorney General Alan Wilson serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and enforcement of laws to ensure the safety and well-being of South Carolina residents.
