(COLUMBIA, S.C.) - South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced the arrest of Nelsen Michael Caspersen, 28, of Ladson, S.C., on 10 charges connected to the sexual exploitation of a minor. Investigators with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, along with several other agencies, were involved in the arrest.
According to Attorney General Wilson, Caspersen distributed files of child sexual abuse material. Caspersen was taken into custody on February 28, 2024, and is facing 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, second degree. This offense carries a penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment for each charge.
The case will be handled by the Attorney General's Office, with Wilson emphasizing the importance of the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law.
In light of this case, it is important to note the significance of using the term "Child Sexual Abuse Material" instead of "child pornography." As Attorney General Wilson explained, "'Pornography' can imply the child was a consenting participant." Globally, the shift towards using CSAM aims to accurately reflect the nature of these crimes and move away from any connotations of consent.
As the legal proceedings move forward, the authorities involved are focused on ensuring justice for the victim and holding the perpetrator accountable for their actions.
