Leonardo DRS, a leading provider of defense products and technologies, has chosen Berkeley County as the location for its first South Carolina operation. The company's investment of approximately $120 million is expected to create 58 new jobs. CEO Bill Lynn expressed pride in the company's role in building the next-generation electric propulsion system for the Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine, stating, "This new facility in South Carolina expands our capability to support our U.S. Navy customers on this and other critical programs that enhance the nation’s submarine industrial base."
Governor Henry McMaster highlighted the significance of Leonardo DRS' investment in South Carolina, emphasizing the state's strong partnership with the defense industry. Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III congratulated the company on its substantial investment in Berkeley County, anticipating positive impacts on the state's economy. Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb welcomed the investment, stating, "This project highlights our county’s continued support for the United States military." Chris Fraser, Charleston Regional Development Alliance Board Chair, praised the region's workforce and business climate, expressing excitement about the collaboration with Leonardo DRS.
The new 140,000-square-foot manufacturing and test center will be located at 1588 Bushy Park Road in Goose Creek, South Carolina. Operations are expected to commence by 2026, with opportunities for individuals interested in joining the Leonardo DRS team to explore career options on the company's careers page. The Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job development credits related to the project, further supporting the company's expansion into South Carolina.
