WASHINGTON – On June 1, Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) challenged the Biden Administration’s student loan cancellation executive action by voting in favor of a Congressional Review Act (CRA) joint resolution of disapproval. In August of 2022, President Biden signed an executive order to forgive student loans, a move which abused his designated constitutional powers and placed costs of up to 1 trillion dollars on working families.

“President Biden’s radical student loan cancellation policy forces millions of working Americans to shoulder debt they never signed up for,” said Senator Scott. “This isn’t fair. I’m voting to overturn his illegal and unconstitutional executive order and make life easier for Americans already struggling in President Biden’s broken economy.”

Background:

Senator Scott has consistently voiced his opposition to President Biden’s student loan cancellation plan. His efforts to protect American taxpayers from big government overreach includes:

  • Leading a letter to the Biden administration, urging it to abandon its irresponsible student loan policy;
  • Releasing a statement of opposition to President’s reckless student loan forgiveness proposal;
  • Writing an op-ed detailing his opposition to the student debt government bailout; and
  • Filing an amicus brief in Biden v. Nebraska and Department of Education v. Brown challenging the Biden administration’s student loan forgiveness program.
