USC Aiken Celebrates Earth Day

6

Aiken, SC (04/22/2022) — In celebration of Earth Day, three new magnolia trees were planted on the University of South Carolina Aiken (USC Aiken) campus today.

Senior university facilities executive, Brian Enter, said, "Each year, we try to recognize Earth Day, and planting these trees today is our small way of celebrating the holiday and reminding ourselves how important it is to take care of our planet. Since we are doing a lot of building right now, it seemed especially important to pause and give back this year."

The Arbor Day Foundation recently distinguished USC Aiken with the Tree Campus Higher Education (TCHE) recognition. TCHE honors colleges, universities, and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation.

To obtain this distinction, the campus met the five core standards for sustainable campus forestry required by TCHE, including the establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for the campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.
