Aiken, SC (04/08/2022) — A University of South Carolina Aiken (USC Aiken) student and United States Army Veteran, Samantha Taylor, recently founded the literary magazine "The Town Square." In celebration of its launch, Taylor will be hosting a community reading event with special guests Professor Roy Seeger and Dr. Andrew Geyer on Tuesday, April 19, from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. at the SAC Mezz on the university campus.
Taylor, a creative writing major, describes the publication as an online literary magazine that provides a platform for writers of all backgrounds and walks of life to share their unique styles and voices with special recognition given to military veterans.
She stressed how difficult it can be for veterans to reintegrate into civilian society and hopes that the magazine can provide a creative outlet and a means of expression through writing, art, or music for veterans who may be struggling. "An additional goal of our organization is to act as a resource for local veterans in need by connecting them with local art and music therapy programs," she said. "Currently, we are working towards becoming a registered non-profit organization. We have projected that our first print copy of the magazine will be released on December 21 of 2023," she said. Meanwhile, the online version can be accessed at townsquaremag.com.
Robert Murphy, director of the Center for Veteran and Military Student Success at USC Aiken, applauded Taylor's ingenuity. "This is a direct reflection of what Samantha learned in the military, and we are watching her apply it to her post-military career. Additionally, she landed in an environment at USC Aiken that promotes this kind of veteran success. She utilizes the resources available to her here on campus as she launches into her next successful career."
