In his state of the state address last week, Gov. Henry McMaster said he wants to see the state build on its past successes and keep moving in the right direction.

“I believe the best is yet to come. I believe in the great people and the greatness of the people of South Carolina,” McMaster said

According to McMaster, the Palmetto State has some things going for it. It is the 10th fastest-growing state with a 10.66% increase in population, according to recent U.S. Census Bureau data, he said.

In addition, the 74-year-old Republican said South Carolina also boasts an unemployment rate of 3.7% in November, below the U.S. average of 4.2%. He said that number is being supported by recent business investments, and cited the Prestage Farms in Kershaw County and the Gallo Winery in Chester County as examples.

"South Carolina is in a great position - we have the largest budget surplus, the largest rainy day reserve account balance, and the lowest debt in our history. Congratulations to our Governor @HenryMcMaster on his State of the State address!” U.S. Rep. Tom Rice tweeted

McMaster called for improving roads, paying teachers higher salaries, increasing the pool of money for technical college scholarships, and improving rural communities as goals for the future.

"Governor @henrymcmaster has laid out a bold vision for our state - one that focuses on teamwork, educating future generations, and leading in a competitive global economy. Under Henry's leadership, South Carolina is prospering, and our future is bright!" U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham tweeted.
