Boston nets second straight SEC Player of the Week honor

With the women’s college basketball season heating up, so is South Carolina junior forward Aliyah Boston.

An Associated Press preseason pick for All-America status, the 6-foot-5 Boston was named Southeastern Conference (SEC) Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, and the fourth time this season.

“Last week Boston took sole ownership of and then extended the program record for consecutive double-doubles by posting her 10th and 11th in a row against Texas A&M and Arkansas, finishing the week with 19.0 points and 14.0 rebounds per game,” according to a post on the university’s athletics website

When the top-ranked Gamecocks (17-1, 5-1 SEC) took on the Texas A&M, Boston notched the double-double in just 13 minutes of play, and finished with finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds in a 65-45 victory.

Her line was similar against Arkansas, in which netted 19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in a 61-52 win. During the second quarter, she accounted for 11 points and six boards, helping the Gamecocks to a nine-point halftime lead. 

In the fourth quarter, the Razorbacks fought back with a 15-0 run to close the lead to five points, but Boston sank two from the stripe to ignite a 7-0 run and regain control of the game.

Boston shared the Player of the Week honors with Missouri's Aijha Blackwell, who averaged 26.5 points and 15 rebounds for the week as unranked Missouri played two games against ranked opponents. Missouri handed the Gamecocks their lone loss to date with a 70-69 upset win Dec. 30.

The Gamecocks next play Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. Monday, followed by anticipated showdown with ninth-ranked Connecticut.
