The S-47 bridge replacement project located over Baskins Creek in Lancaster County will be the focus of a South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) public information meeting 5-7 p.m. Jan. 13 in Heath Springs at the Rich Hill Fire Department on 3089 Rocky River Road.

SCDOT will discuss the concept design and project details of the proposed span, and solicit the comments and input from residents.

According to the SCDOT release, "As a part of its 10-Year Plan that includes replacing deteriorating bridges, SCDOT proposes to replace the existing S-47 (Baskins Hill Road) bridge structure with a new bridge on the same alignment. Traffic will be detoured during construction. SCDOT estimates that construction could start in early 2023 and take approximately 12 months to complete. The existing bridge is structurally deficient and load-restricted."

This project is just one of many that are a part of the SCDOT's initiative to replace aging infrastructure that aligns with the federal government's Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act signed into law in mid-November.

As a result, SCDOT has access to federal funding for these projects after deferring maintenance on this critical infrastructure for more than 30 years due to inadequate funding.

The initiative will see SCDOT replace more than 465 structurally deficient bridges across the state by the year 2027.

Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting and offer input on the project, or they can do so online at https://scdotgis.online/s47bridge, or by emailing S-47 bridge replacement Project Manager Melissa Jackson at JacksonMA@scdot.org.

Letters can also be sent to Jackson at SCDOT, 955 Park Street, P.O. Box 191, Columbia, SC 29201-3959.
