President Biden has appointed former State Rep. Laurie Funderburk as executive director of the Farm Service Agency in South Carolina.
"Congratulations to my friend Rep. @LS_Funderburk on this wonderful new opportunity to make a difference in our state and country!" former State Sen. Vincent Sheheen tweeted. "I’m so thrilled, and it’s so well deserved."
"State Executive Directors oversee this work, ensuring the needs of local constituents are met and that USDA resources are distributed equitably and fairly," Biden's press release said.
Funderburk served in the South Carolina House of Representatives for 16 years, and was Secretary of the SC House Rural Caucus.
"Funderburk has over 20 years of experience in the legal, business, and insurance fields," a news release said. "Fortunate to be raised by a farming family, she volunteers with local and statewide organizations that work to improve community health and access to nutrition."
The Farm Service Agency's mission is "serving all farmers, ranchers, and agricultural partners through the delivery of effective, efficient agricultural programs for all Americans," its website said. It is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The agency administers programs in conservation, disaster assistance, marketing and price support and other areas, the website said.
