Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce: Tidelands Health provider honored with national award for excellence in diabetes care

Wrtop

Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on October 4.

A Tidelands Health nurse practitioner and diabetes specialist has received a national award for excellence in her field.

Eileen Egan, a certified family nurse practitioner at Tidelands Health Endocrinology at Myrtle Beach, received the Donna Tomky Award for Excellence in Practice from the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists.

Named in memory of the association’s former president, the award honors a provider who advances the integration of self-management behaviors with clinical management through practice, health plan or health system innovation.

Improving utilization of self-management tools for people living with diabetes has been a focus of Egan’s work. She developed a program that allows patients to make the most of technology tools used to manage their diabetes. She also developed a program to transition young adults with diabetes from their pediatric team to self-management with adult-focused endocrine providers. The program’s outcomes were published in the association’s journal, “The Science of Diabetes Self-Management and Care.”

In addition, Egan mentors nurse practitioner students with a focus on advancing the standard of diabetes care and management by all providers.

“I’m very passionate about educating people with diabetes about the latest technology and treatment options so they can live better lives through better health,” Egan said. “I’m rewarded every day as I see patients improve their quality of life.”
