Town of Hilton Head Island: Town to Host Community Education Program About Family Compounds & Family Subdivisions

Ullahhistoricalsigns

Town of Hilton Head Island issued the following announcement on September 24.

What is a family compound or family subdivision? What are the qualifications for a family compound? How do I apply to get my property designated as a family subdivision?

You can find out the answers to these questions and more at a community education program the Town of Hilton Head Island is hosting at 4 pm, Thursday, September 30, at the Rowing and Sailing Center at Squire Pope Community Park, 133 Squire Pope Road.

In July, the Hilton Head Island Town Council voted to expand its Land Management Ordinance (LMO) to define and include uses for family compounds and family subdivisions - two amendments that will help native Islander families better preserve land for future generations.

The amendments primarily target properties the families own in Hilton Head Island's historic Gullah Geechee neighborhoods of Chaplin, Marshland/Gardner, Spanish Wells, Jarvis/Jonesville, Squire Pope, Big Stoney, Little Stoney, Bay Gall, Grassland, Big Hill and Mitchelville.

Town staff will discuss the following topics during the workshop:

  • History of family compounds and family subdivisions.
  • The difference between a family compound and a multifamily development.
  • The difference between a family subdivision and regular subdivision.
  • Qualifications for family compound and family subdivision.
  • The application process with the Town.
The Town plans to offer additional workshops about family compounds and subdivisions. For more information, contact Sheryse DuBose at 843-341-4683 or SheryseD@hiltonheadislandsc.gov.
