U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) recently spoke with Pakistani officials about the ongoing volatility in Afghanistan, following the U.S. military’s withdrawal from the region.
“Just spoke with the Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States about the situation in Afghanistan,” Graham posted on Twitter. “Very much appreciate the efforts of the Pakistani government to assist with the evacuation of U.S. citizens, our allies, and other nations. Any sustainable solution in Afghanistan must include Pakistan.”
Geo.tv reported Pakistan Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa told U.S. officials the country has no favorites in the region. Bajwa is reported to have also strongly condemned the recent bombing near the Kabul airport that killed dozens, including several Americans.
“Any sustainable solution in Afghanistan must include Pakistan," Graham added. "We all must remember Pakistan is a nuclear-armed nation, and there is a Pakistan version of the Taliban who wishes topple the Pakistani government and military. Very complicate region and dangerous times.”
After making the decision to remove American military forces from the region, President Joe Biden has come under heavy criticism in the wake of the attack, which was carried out by a single suicide bomber.
Even as he has vowed to hunt those responsible for a series of attacks over the last year that has ended in dozens more being killed, the president has continued to defend his orders to withdraw, arguing “the United States long ago achieved its original rationale for invading the country in 2001.”
