Sen. Lindsey Graham said in a recent social media post that he's pleased with the bipartisan infrastructure bill that he and other Washington lawmakers hammered out last week.
The Senate passed the $1 trillion infrastructure bill early Tuesday, CNBC reported, with a vote of 69 yeas in favor and 30 nays against the measure.
On Saturday, the Senate passed a procedural vote to end the debate over the long-fought-over bipartisan infrastructure bill, House Resolution 3684, UPI and other news sources reported. The Senate passed cloture on the measure in a vote of 68 yeas to 29 nays.
"Big day for (the) bipartisan infrastructure bill," Graham tweeted Saturday. "America is in desperate need of real infrastructure improvements and the Senate needs to prove to the country that it can still get big things done."
The legislation, also known as the "Investing in a New Vision for the Environment and Surface Transportation (INVEST) in America Act," would spend huge amounts of money on projects including the nation's highway, transit, safety, research and rail programs. The bill's primary sponsor in the House is Rep. Peter A. DeFazio (D-Oregon).
The INVEST in America Act narrowly passed the House Aug. 1, with a vote of 221 yeas to 210 nays, and with only two Republicans voting in favor of the legislation.
As a result of the Senate's final vote in favor of the legislation Tuesday, the bill heads back to the House. Should the bill get by without changes, it will then be sent to President Joe Biden for his signature.
"I appreciate all the hard work of my colleagues who negotiated a good bill and am cheering on the effort as the day unfolds," Graham said in a reply to his Twitter post. "Stay strong!"
