Former U.S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has officially given his endorsement to Gov. Henry McMaster's 2022 reelection campaign.

Pompeo delivered his announcement at a Republican fundraiser dinner event July 30, according to MSN News. The former secretary also commended McMaster's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and for supporting funding for police programs.

“I am honored to be endorsed by such a strong conservative leader such as @mikepompeo,” McMaster tweeted Aug. 2. “Together, we’ll fight to protect what makes South Carolina and our nation so exceptional.”

The Post and Courier reported that Pompeo said that the 2022 and 2024 elections will be "critical" for the GOP and called on South Carolina Republicans to “be fearless” in working to elect people who share their views.

“Get out there and make known to everyone around you the values you have, the reason you believe in them and why it is so important for South Carolina and America to continue to work tirelessly to deliver those values to the generations behind us,” said in the The Post and Courier.

McMaster, a Republican, is running for a second full term in 2022. He will be challenged by Democratic candidates former U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham from Charleston, and state Sen. Mia McLeod from Columbia.
