South Carolina residents are being encouraged to visit farmers markets across the state during National Farmers Market Week, which runs from August 3 to 9, 2025. The South Carolina Department of Agriculture highlights the importance of these markets for both consumers and local producers.
Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers stated, “When you shop at a farmers market, you’re supporting your neighbors – and what better time than during the abundant summer months for South Carolina produce?”
According to the department, American farmers typically receive about 15.9 cents of every dollar spent on food by consumers. The remainder goes toward costs such as marketing and distribution. By selling directly at farmers markets, producers can reduce these off-farm expenses and keep a larger share of their earnings. Additionally, farmers markets provide opportunities for new and small-scale growers to sell products directly to customers.
Shoppers benefit by having access to fresh produce and the chance to interact with local growers. Markets feature seasonal items like peaches, butter beans, and okra.
The department offers an online listing that allows users to search for farmers markets by keyword or county. State-operated farmers markets are located in West Columbia, Greenville, and Florence. There is also an online directory maintained by the South Carolina Association of Farmers Markets.
