South Carolina’s annual sales tax holiday will take place from Friday, August 1, through Sunday, August 3. During this period, shoppers will not pay sales tax on a range of items including school supplies, computers, clothing, shoes, and other back-to-school essentials that fall under certain price limits. More information about eligible items can be found on the state’s official website.
Ben Homeyer, state director for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), encouraged residents to support local businesses during the tax holiday. “This weekend gives South Carolina families a great chance to save money while supporting the local businesses in their neighborhoods,” Homeyer said. “Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. They create jobs, help fund our schools, and give back to the community through donations and sponsorships.”
Homeyer emphasized the impact of shopping locally: “When you buy from local stores, your money helps South Carolina grow,” he said. “For every dollar you spend at a small business, about 67 cents stays right here in our state. That same dollar also creates another 50 cents through worker paychecks and local suppliers. This means more jobs and stronger communities for everyone.”
The timing of this year’s tax holiday comes as many small businesses in South Carolina face economic challenges. The latest NFIB Small Business Economic Trends report shows that the national Small Business Optimism Index declined slightly in June to 98.6 but remains just above its long-term average over 51 years. Business owners continue to cite concerns about taxes, excess inventory levels, and inconsistent consumer demand.
“Shopping at small businesses this weekend gives South Carolina’s economy a real boost,” Homeyer said. “It’s an easy way to help make our state stronger.”
