Jerome Singleton, commissioner of the South Carolina High School League, recently advised schools in the state to prepare backup plans for sports schedules and athletic activities due to escalating COVID-19 cases, according to a report by The Sun News.
Specifically, SCHL is requesting that schools and their corresponding individual regions have a backup strategy in place for deciding playoff spots in the event of regular-season cancellations.
“There is no health agency that is going to tell us that tomorrow is going to be better, or tomorrow is going to be worse or three weeks from now it’s going to be great,” Singleton told The Sun News. “I don’t know what I don’t know, but as I discover it, then we are going to take it into consideration.”
The subject of COVID and its impact on the fall sports season was raised during an SCHSL executive committee meeting, where it was decided that “any region game canceled due to the virus would be counted as a no-contest rather than a forfeit, so region standings would not be affected,” according to The Sun News.
The committee also determined that if a non-region game is canceled, the contract is voided and the other school is not required to pay.
On Aug. 5, Singleton also issued a memo to schools informing them of the schedule adjustments.
