The South Carolina Gamecocks track and field team competed in the first day of the East Coast Relays in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 1. The team participated in seven events, with notable performances from both men’s and women’s squads.
The meet saw Akala Garrett win the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.36 seconds. Jathiyah Muhammad took first place in the women’s pole vault by clearing a height of 4.10 meters (13-5.25). Both athletes are transfers, with Garrett coming from Texas and Muhammad from Arizona.
On the track, Kymora-Lee Williams achieved a personal best in the women’s 200 meters, finishing eighth overall with a time of 23.18 seconds. For the men, Robert Stitts Jr. also set a personal record in the 200 meters by finishing sixth at 20.65 seconds.
In field events, Khaliq Muhammad secured third place for South Carolina in the men’s pole vault after clearing 5.15 meters (16-10.75). Other results included Brandon Dennis placing fourth in men’s shot put with a throw of 16.58 meters (54-4.75), while Maya Love finished fifteenth and Jasmine Cook forty-first in the women’s 200 meters.
The Gamecocks will conclude their participation at Hodges Stadium tomorrow, starting with the men’s 110-meter hurdles preliminary round at 11:30 a.m., ending with the men’s four-by-400 meter relay at approximately 4:05 p.m.
