The South Carolina Department of Transportation announced on April 22 that it is requesting public comments on proposed bridge repair projects in Newberry and Union counties.
According to the department, both projects are part of SCDOT’s Statewide Closed and Load Restricted Bridge Repair Program. The planned repairs aim to reduce the number of load restricted bridges in South Carolina by providing comprehensive and cost-effective solutions. The improvements are expected to enhance regional mobility and extend the service life of the bridges.
For Newberry County, SCDOT proposes repair, rehabilitation, and preservation services for the SC 121 bridge over Saluda River. The department said that no detours are planned for this project, as repairs will be completed using extended single-lane closures lasting approximately 120 days. More information is available at the project website: https://projectportal.scdot.org/sc-121-bridge-over-saluda-river.
In Union County, similar work is proposed for the SC 18 (Pacolet Street) bridge over Southern Railroad. According to SCDOT, repairs will also be conducted without detours through extended single-lane closures expected to last about 90 days. Details can be found at https://projectportal.scdot.org/sc-18-bridge-over-southern-railroad.
SCDOT will accept comments through May 14, 2026. Comments may be submitted online via each project website, by mail to Warren Hart at SCDOT’s Columbia office, by phone at 803-737-2049, or by email to HARTWD@scdot.gov. The department encourages members of the public to review project details and provide feedback or questions regarding potential impacts. All comments received during the comment period will be reviewed and included in the project record; individuals who request a response will receive one. Information provided may be subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act.
Further details can be found in the organization’s press release.
